You can also keep typing more letters and it becomes less of a problem - e.g., typing the full word "sound" makes it clearer that the Sound item is hidden under the results because the spotlight becomes brightest there and you can see it peeking out. I admit that this isn't a very annoying problem since typically only 4 items are potentially hidden. (A similar thing happens in some applications in which the application highlights a found word that happens to be hidden by the Find dialog.) ![]() The spotlight provides positional feedback that can help you remember the item's location the next time you need it, but it doesn't help when those items are hidden under the results menu. (This is the solution that Windows Vista uses.) Or, replace the contents of the entire window with the results list of the matching items (perhaps categorized, showing icons for each category). (Sound appears to the right of Print & Fax.)Ī better design might be to replace the contents of the entire window with only those icons that match. In this case, the item I'm seeking is the system preference that controls sound, but as I type s, o, u, the Sound system preference is not visible because the search results dropdown hides it. As you type the name of the item you're seeking, items that don't match are dimmed and items that match are highlighted with a spotlight effect. ![]() The search box in the top right is supposed to enable you to quickly find what you're looking for. This screen snapshot demonstrates a small design flaw in the System Preferences application in Apple OS X 10.5.8.
